STANDING STONES
STANDING STONES
Standing stones are found all over Ireland. Sometimes, they stand sentinel and alone. Sometimes they are found in rows or circles. Their function is conjecture. Perhaps they were raised up to mark territories or graves, to act as signposts marking location, distance and direction to important places, or perhaps they were part of rituals and ceremonies.
STONE ROWS
These date from the Middle to the Late bronze age 1600 - 600 BC." Scientifc studies have led archeologists to believe that they could have been used to record celestial events at certain times of the year"(Discovering the Bronze Age)
STONE CIRCLES
"These are usually found in upland areas, especially in counties Cork, Kerry, Tyrone and Galway. They sometimes contain a single burial, and may have been used to mark astronomical events as well."
(Discovering the Bronze Age)
There are many wonderful sites which document the position of these ancient stones. Megalithomania is excellent because it has maps showing the distribution of the monuments, and it shows the sites by monument and county. According to Megalithomania there are 289 standing stones, 44 stone pairs and 44 stone rows or alignments.
Strange to relate how many of these stones are found along or close to the Labbacallee lines.

THE DRUID'S CIRCLE IN KENMARE
Kenmare was a very important sit in pre-historic Ireland. According to Brian Clancy in a fascinating book called "_______________", Kenmare was the point of entry to Ireland for two invasions: ________________ and _________________________. The Labbacalle lines travel directly through this town.
In the druid's circle there are 15 stones with a boulder burial in the centre. The circle is about 17 m in diameter.
