THE LABBACALLEE LINES
IS THERE A LOGICAL EXPLANTION?
Labbacallee - the hag's bed, is an earlybronze age wedge tomb that I pass every day on my way to Fermoy Adair School where I teach. The setting sun at the equinox in March and September, filters through an opening and lights the chambers of this tomb. The folklore that is associated with this tomb fascinates me.
In 2013, I had been teaching about this wedge tomb which is the largest in Ireland. For the lesson, I had a photo copy of an ordnance survey map to teach the kids about the location of the site etc. I also had been teaching about angles and I had a protractor on the table. One wall of the tomb lies on an east west compass line, so I idly placed my protractor on the site on the map and began to draw lines radiating at 10 degrees out from the site and the most amazing thing began to happen…so amazing that it took my breath away.
I discovered that the lines radiating from the centre were passing directly through the major cities, towns and ports of Ireland such as Cork, Limerick, Galway, Belfast etc. Bronze is made from copper and tin smelted together using charcoal and the lines were going directly to copper mines, to areas where charcoal was available long ago, to tin producing Cornwall in England and to re-known Bronze Age settlements in Ireland. As I watched this jigsaw developing. I was reminded of a tale about the Tuatha de Dannan: fairy folk coming to invade Ireland and finding it difficult to penetrate the energy field around Ireland, and I wonder if this wedge tomb was not only a burial site, but also a satellite centre in ancient times. How else can I explain the phenomenon I have discovered? And I wonder does my discovery have implications for other ancient megalithic monuments in other parts of the world? Did I have a Eureka moment or is there a logical explanation?
